Looking back at May 31st throughout hip hop history we have to say happy birthday to Daryl McDaniels aka D.M.C. of the legendary Run D.M.C.
Happy birthday to hip hop OG and all around cool dude Daryl "D.M.C." McDaniels of the seminal Run-D.M.C. who was born 54 years ago today. Daryl started his journey with music as a DJ learning the basics on a set of hand-me-down decks and a mixer he got from his borther and adopting the name "DJ Get High". Between 1978 and 1981 Daryl adopted a variety of stage names finally settling on D.M.C. which stood for "Devastating Mic Control" and selling his turntables leading to the germ of the idea for the group that would eventually become Run-D.M.C. Daryl addressed his nickname in the song "King of Rock"

Additionally, on May 31st 1995 Luniz released their hit single "I Got 5 On It". Anymore, Luniz is widely regarded as a 1 hit wonder, but in 1995 this rap duo had a very promising future with their hit single "I Got 5 On It". The single reached #2 on the Billboard charts in Germany, #3 in the U.K. and #8 within the United States. The single was certified platinum by the RIAA in 1995. The beat for "I Got 5 On It" has been used by rappers such as P. Diddy, and The Game among others.
