27 Years Ago Today Ice Cube Dropped His First Solo Album

AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was released on May 16th 1990.

One of the most defining records of the 1990's was released 27 years ago today. Ice Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was the first solo record from the iconic rapper and the first record after his split with N.W.A. Even though Cube wanted to continue to work with Dr. Dre label heads nixxed the idea early on in the album's conception.

AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was primarily produced by the production team behind Public Enemy: The Bomb Squad with some added help on tracks from Sir Jinx, cousin of Dr. Dre. Much of the lyrical work from the album came from pre-written verses that Cube had penned for N.W.A. and the song "Jackin' For Beats" allegedly contains beats that would have been used on the next N.W.A. album.

On it's release many heralded the album as the future of hip hop calling the album a "modern classic". Without any promotional material the album when gold within the first two weeks of its release and hit platinum two months later.

The album holds up to the test of time and fits into the category of "classic" or "essential" in anyone's list of best hip hop albums. In fact AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted has popped up on more than 10 "best of hip hop" lists from everyone from to Spin and Rolling Stone.
