Chano wasn’t happy with Netflix’s latest movie featuring Will Smith and orks.
The latest movie from Netflix called Bright features Will Smith as a cop in a world that is essentially Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings but 200 years after the swords have been put away in favor of modern firearms. Society has evolved, but racism and prejudice still lingers. And the prejudice is reserved for Orks. It’s an allegorical take on racism that has sparked many debates and conversations on forums and social media.
However, Chicago MC Chance The Rapper was not very impressed with Bright’s depiction of racism – taking to social media to criticize the film:
“I found the way they tried to illustrate americas racism through the mythical creatures to be a little shallow, […] I always feel a lil cheated when I see allegorical racism in movies cause that racism usually stems from human emotion or tolerance but not by law or systems the way it is in real life. The characters in #Bright live in a timeline where racism is gone… cause we hate ork now.”
Bright has it’s share of critics, being called one of the worst films of 2017 and beyond with one critic, David Ehrlich of IndieWire, going as far as to say:
“Potentially a dark harbinger of things to come, Bright isn’t only the worst film of 2017, it could be responsible for many of the worst films of 2018 and beyond,”
Brutal.
