Are You Damaging Your Car By Letting It Sit And Warm Up?
With the bitter cold temperatures on top of the on-and-off snow, everyone is headed outside early to warm their car up in the morning.
Well it is rumored that letting your car sit in idle for more than 60 seconds may harm your engine and pistons. This news comes as a shock to the population who endures harsh winters.
So what is the proper way to get your car warmed up? After speaking with a few mechanics we found the best way to warm your engine is by getting in the vehicle starting it up and drive with gradual acceleration rather than smashing on the gas. Mechanics also stated it there is no official research that states letting your car sit in idle for more than a minute will harm your engine. The only thing that may come of warming your car is it wastes fuel. Letting it warm up for up to 10 minutes in below freezing temperatures to get the engine up to a fair temperature is okay but it is always better for the car to be driven to warm up.
