Deadbeat Parents Not Eligible for $1,200 Coronavirus Payout
If you owe child support, you won’t be getting this stimulus check that everyone is excited about.
While the $2 trillion stimulus package approved by President Donald Trump Friday provides a $1,200 check for every U.S. resident who makes less than $75,000 a year, there is a catch. People who are behind on child support payments won’t be included in the mass mailing.
According to Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, a key author of the stimulus bill and the chairman of the Finance Committee. “The only administrative offset that will be enforced applies to those who have past due child support payments that the states have reported to the Treasury Department,” Grassley says.
What’s crazy is that deadbeat parents appear to be the only people left out! Residents who owe federal or state taxes, as well as people who are behind on government and student loan payments, are eligible for the payout, Grassley says.
Wouldn’t it make better sense to give each deadbeat parent’s $1,200 to the parent they owe money to?
Do you think this is fair? How would you handle the situation?
