Dozens of Hand Sanitizers Are Potentially Toxic, FDA Warns The Food and Drug Administration has a list of potentially toxic hand sanitizer. Sanitizer labeled with ethanol has been found to really contain methanol. Methanol is also known as wood alcohol and can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and deadly if swallowed. The FDA has a list of 75 sanitizers to avoid. Some of the sanitizers to avoid were sold at Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
