I guess it depends on who you ask.
Netflix is apologizing for and pulled the artwork for its French-language movie, Cuties.
The movie is about an 11 year old girl who becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s tradition.
The poster for the movie showed 4 young girls wearing revealing cheerleading outfits and posing in a sexual manner.
Netflix has apologized.
Here’s the interesting part: The movie won the world cinema dramatic directing award at Sundance Film Festival. I think the subject matter might be a little questionable but it’s realistic! There are plenty of little girls in this world who want to twerk and act older than what they are. In addition to the Sundance award, the director of the film, Maïmouna Doucouré received the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women.
Ultimately, I think it’s based on perception. If you’re not looking at little girls sexually, why are you bothered by this movie or cover? I could be wrong but you be the judge! The movie comes to Netflix on Sept. 9. I’ll be giving it a watch before giving my full opinion.
