2021 is shaping up to be a massive year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Between four film releases and multiple Disney Plus series, fans have a lot to look forward to. But one question that no one has been eager to ask, is what the future of Black Panther looks like. Rumors have started to surface that Black Panther 2 could begin filming as early as July.
The Future of the Black Panther
Earlier this year, the world was rocked by the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman. Letitia Wright, who played Princess Shuri in Black Panther, said recently she can’t imagine filming Black Panther 2 without Boseman. But it seems like Marvel has put into motion the plans for filming aimed at a July start date. The Hollywood Reporter sources said the shoot for Black Panther 2 will start in Atlanta and last six months.
Very little is currently known about the sequel, but several of the stars will be returning. That list of stars includes Letitia Wright as Princess Shuri, who will have a more prominent role. As well as Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett. They will likely be reprising their roles as Nakia, M’Baku, and Ramonda. Marvel has also confirmed they will not be using CGI to insert the late Chadwick Boseman into the film. Beyond that, Marvel has not commented on the story.
It’s difficult to know exactly where the story will go in Black Panther 2. But Tenoch Huerta, who starred in Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico is in talks to play an antagonist in the movie. Should the rumors be true and Black Panther 2 does start filming in July, due to the ongoing global pandemic, it will likely be some time before fans are able to see it. Black Widow, The Eternals, and Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings are all in post-production or finished and ready to go. Spider-Man 3, Doctor Strange: Into the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor 4: Love and Thunder have all entered filming and production as well.
Also take into consideration the amount of time and focus being put on the Disney Plus series, which Kevin Feige has said is the studio’s main focus. It’s going to be some time before we get to see any take up the mantle of the Black Panther.
