Lauren Hill Discusses Why She Hasn’t Recorded An Album In 23 Years
Lauren Hill recently did a rare interview with Rolling Stone for an episode of their 500 Greatest Albums Podcast. During, she was asked why she’s never done an album since 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Lauren stated, “The wild thing is, no one from my label has ever called me and asked, ‘How can we help you make another album?’ Ever … ever. Did I say ever? Ever.”
She also talked about not wanting to move forward with a label that had bad intentions. She said, “People had included me in their own narratives of their successes as it pertained to my album, and if this contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy. After The Miseducation, there were scores of tentacled obstructionists, politics, repressing agendas, unrealistic expectations, and saboteurs everywhere.”
Lauren does recognize, though, that the album was a big deal and very impactful in the music industry. “I challenged the norm and introduced a new standard,” She said, “I believe The Miseducation did that, and I believe I still do this. Defy convention when the convention is questionable.”
