Lauryn Hill Is the First Female MC to Score a Diamond Record
It’s official: Lauryn Hill’s debut album, “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill,” is diamond after selling more than 10 million copies in the U.S. That showing makes her the first female rapper to hit that mark.
Earlier this week, the Recording Industry Association of America tweeted out the news.
“Welcome to the RIAA Diamond Club @MsLaurynHill! #TheMiseducationofLaurynHill is now a (10X) certified album!” it said.
“The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” arrived in 1998 and pushed 422,624 copies in its first week out, debuting at No. 1 on the U.S. charts. The album hit No. 2 in the U.K.
Other women who has scored a diamond-selling album include Adele and Britney Spears, but Hill is the first female rapper to earn the honors. Other hip-hop artists who hold diamond-selling records include Eminem, the Beastie Boys, Outkast and 2Pac.
Congratulations, Hill!
