Thirteen Michigan schools are being recognized as the best in the nation, making the list of the 2021 National Blue Ribbon schools.

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) has recognized 325 schools across the U.S., “based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups,” according to a press release.

“This year’s cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish,” Secretary Cardona said in a statement. “I commend this school and all our Blue Ribbon honorees for working to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.”

Cardona added, “In the face of unprecedented circumstances, you found creative ways to engage, care for, protect, and teach our children. Blue Ribbon Schools have so much to offer and can serve as a model for other schools and communities so that we can truly build back better.”

Michigan’s 2021 honorees include:

  • Martin Luther King Elementary School (Ann Arbor)
  • Avoca Elementary School (Yale)
  • Conant Elementary School (Bloomfield Hills)
  • Dutton Elementary School (Caledonia)
  • Haigh Elementary School (Dearborn)

The USED will recognize the 2021 Blue Ribbon schools at a special ceremony Nov. 4 through 5 near Washington, D.C. Each school will get a plaque and flag.
