This Major Michigan Brewery is Being Sold
There’s no denying that we have some fantastic breweries in Michigan. In fact, I would venture to say that we have one of the best states in the U.S. for bubbly brews. Now, one of Michigan’s largest breweries has announced it’s being sold. It’s always sad when a locally-owned businesses is sold, but times change, and people retire, so sometimes the best option is to sell. What’s nice is when the new owner carries on old traditions.
According to an email sent out to customers, Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery is being sold, and Founder & President Larry Bell is retiring. Australian-based company Lion is purchasing the brewery.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together,” Bell said in a statement. “From our wonderful fans, to the amazing team that has helped share our beer with the world, to the ways we’ve been able to invest in causes we believe in – this has been an absolutely incredible journey.”
Bell’s was founded in 1985 in Kalamazoo. It’s Michigan’s largest independent brewery. “I’ve been doing this for more than 36 years and recently battled some serious health issues. I want everyone who loves this company like I do to know we have found a partner that truly values our incredible beer, our culture, and the importance of our roots here in Michigan,” Bell added.
Bell’s also owns New Belgium and Escanaba’s Upper Hand Brewery. The brewery is expected to remain in Kalamazoo and Comstock.
