Doja Cat Says Her Next Album Will Be Mostly Rap
The debate on whether Doja Cat is a rapper or not might come to an end as the Planet Her creator says that her next project will be predominantly hip-hop.
Remy Ma infamously called Doja out on her Drink Champs interview saying that the California native is not a rapper.
“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” Remy said. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”
Remy is not the only one voicing her opinion on what category of music Doja fits in. After Doja swept the 2022 Billboard Awards in the R&B category many fans said she shouldn’t have been put in that group either. However, those comments are not stopping the “Kiss Me More” singer from moving in a different direction for her next offering. “I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with—I got a lot better,” Doja told Elle. “I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”
She added that the album is not done yet but she heavily anticipating the release: “I have been getting songs and things sent to me…. Oh f—, I wish I could tell people! There’s some really cool stuff that I got sent from friends. They’re all working on beats, and I’m giving them notes and they know what I want, so I’m excited.”
As for the future of rap, Doja says that the women have got it covered, “There’s an explosion of amazing female rap talent out there right now,” the Grammy-winner said. “It’s so cool to see that, because we didn’t have that when we were younger.”
Most recently, the rapper announced that she would canceling her upcoming summer performing plans including The Weeknd's stadium tour that kicks off in July due to her tonsil surgery.
