Drake Helped J. Cole Sign With Canadian Basketball Team
J. Cole’s hoop dreams live on: the Grammy-winning rapper signed a deal with Canadian basketball team Scarborough Shooting Stars last week. However, Complex uncovered that the very business deal between Cole and the Canadian team linked back to a party hosted by Drake.
Nicholas “Niko” Carino is the co-founder of Drake’s OVO brand and a close friend to the “Certified Lover Boy.” Niko also so happens to be part-owner of the Shooting Stars as well.
“You know, Dreamville and OVO are family,” Carino said. “Drake had a birthday party in L.A. last year. The conversation was, ‘I heard you have your team.’ It organically grew from there.”
The league has its season opener today (May 26) with the Shooting Stars paying a visit to the Guelph Nighthawks. Although the Dreamville founder just joined the team, his teammates already only have good things to say about his work ethic.
“J. Cole, he’s really putting in the work,” forward Olu Famutimi said. “Whatever we’re doing, he’s doing probably even more. Comes in early, stays late, and his drive right now, he wants to become better and wants to be known as a guy that can really hoop.”
Previously, Cole played three games with the Rwanda Patriots BBC in the African Basketball League last year.
