How Good Are Michigan Drivers? New Study Ranks the States
Hard stop. I can’t say that I’ve ever looked around on the road and said to myself, “Wow. Michigan has the best drivers around.” I love our state, but I’ve never thought of Michiganders as being the best drivers, or even good. That said, we do have to navigate harsh winters and stay safe on the roads in those difficult conditions, so maybe that has earned us points (the good kind) when it comes to our driving skills.
Insurify.com has put together a study of the U.S. states with the best drivers, and believe it or not, Michigan tops the list. If you’re wondering why, read on for the answer.
As for methodology, the site states, “The data scientists at Insurify, a site to compare auto insurance rates, referred to their database of over 4.6 million car insurance applications to identify the states with the best drivers in the nation. Applicants disclose their state of residence and any prior violations on their driving record when applying for car insurance. Insurify’s data scientists compared the number of drivers with at least one at-fault violation on record within the past seven years (including accidents, DUIs, failures to stop, speeding, reckless driving, passing violations, and other citations for illegal driving behavior) to the total number of drivers applying for car insurance in each state. The states with the lowest rate of infractions, or the greatest proportion of drivers with a clean record, were identified as having the best drivers.”
According to the study, Michigan has the highest share of drivers with a clean record at a whopping 88.16%. That makes Michigan the state with the best drivers. Does it count if you got a ticket at 19 years old but have been good ever since? Asking for a, um, friend. Find the full study of the states with the best drivers here.
