Well, they call them “influencers” for a reason! Instagram is backtracking its plans to make its social media platform more like its video-centric rival TikTok after criticism from users and mega-influencers like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.
As we earlier reported, Instagram rolled out plans to alter its algorithm so that users would be exposed to more video content and push more recommendations. CEO Adam Moressi confirmed in a video on Tuesday (July 26) that the app will be “shifting more and more to videos over time,” adding that he believes “that more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time. We see this [happening] even if we change nothing. We see this even if you just look at the chronological feed.”
Per the New York Post, Instagram owners Meta reported a drop in revenue for the first time in its history. Mosseri said of halting their plans, “I’m glad we took a risk – if we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough. But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup. [When] we’ve learned a lot, then we come back with some sort of new idea or iteration. So we’re going to work through that.”
Kardashian and Jenner, who have a combined following on Instagram of 686 million users, shared a viral post on the photo-sharing app earlier this week which read: “Make Instagram Instagram again” in bold letters, adding in parentheses underneath, “Stop trying to be TikTok I just want to see cute photos of my friends. Sincerely, everyone.”
Kardashian, 41, shared the post to her Instagram Story, writing beneath it, “PRETTY PLEASE,” while Jenner, 24, added, “PLEASEEEEEEE” to her Instagram Story.
