Nicki Minaj Receives Video Vanguard Award At 2022 VMAs
Nicki Minaj is the newest recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The Queens rapper was given the award after her stellar performance of her classic hits. She included her newest record “Super Freaky Girl.”
After her performance, the Pink Friday creator took the stage and thanked those who paved the way for her. She gave a shout out to Missy Eliott, Foxy Brown, as well as Lil Wayne who signed her to YMCB back in 2009. The MC also used her speech to highlight the importance of mental health while speaking about the late Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” said Paramount+ executive Bruce Gillmer said, per Variety. “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki.'”
Previous recipients of the award include: Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Rihanna, P!nk, Jennifer Lopez, and Missy Elliott.
