Michigan Spot Named the No. 1 Best for Fall Foliage
Fall is here, and even though the colors are running late in Michigan this year, there are some areas of the state that are quite vibrant. So, if you want to view the best autumn colors in America, where should you go?
The folks at 10best.com, spearheaded by the USA Today Network, have put together a study to find the best places to view fall foliage in America. What’s extra cool is that this study is largely based on voting. “For many of us, the only thing that takes the sting away from the end of summer is the anticipation of the beautiful fall colors,” they state. “The leaf-peeping season has arrived, so we went on a search for the top places to view the changing trees. A panel of travel experts selected the original 20 nominees, then readers voted for the 10 best destinations for fall foliage.”
As it turns out, Michigan has the No. 1 spot in America to view fall foliage, and it’s the Upper Peninsula. This is no big surprise, as the UP has long been considered a favorite destination for autumn colors. If you’re thinking of heading up there, the UP’s colors are expected to peak the first week of October.
Of the No. 1 spot, the study says, “Just about the entire Upper Peninsula puts on a display of fall color that peaks during the last two weeks of September and the first week of October. A favorite fall experience for leaf peepers is the drive on M-26 along the shores of Lake Roland and past the trees of Copper Country State Forest.” That’s all very true. As for other popular destinations, coming in at No. 2 is Taos, New Mexico, followed by Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania; White Mountains, New Hampshire; and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
