Michigan Weather: 18 Inches of Snow Coming This Week

It's just mid-October, but winter is basically going to be here this coming week for a portion of Michigan. Of course, I'm talking about snow.
The Mitten is going to see its first significant snowfall this week. Some areas of Michigan will see an upwards of 18 inches of the white stuff. Here's when and where to expect the snowstorm.
The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a winter storm warning starting Sunday (Oct. 16) for the entire western third of the Upper Peninsula. The warning states that there will be heavy snow falling between Sunday night and the middle of the day on Tuesday. Aside from the heavy area, a winter weather advisory is in effect for the southwest portion of the U.P. for lighter accumulations of snow. A winter storm watch is also effect for the central section of the Upper Peninsula for Monday night (Oct. 17) through Thursday.
If you live in lower Michigan, like me, you could also see some snow. According to the NWS, Monday through Wednesday, Michiganders should expect some accumulating snow over some of lower Michigan, especially in the "snowbelt" area. Even outside the snowbelt areas of lower Michigan, cities such as Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Flint are projected to get a rain/snow mix on Tuesday morning, according to Weather.com. The good news if you're not ready for the snow and cold is that much of lower Michigan is projected to be back into the 60s and even 70s by next weekend. It appears summer will have one last hurrah.
Regarding the NWS at Marquette's winter storm warning area, they state, "Heavy, wet snow begins tonight and continues through Monday night, resulting in poor travel conditions. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches in the higher terrain a few miles inland from Lake Superior with locally higher totals approaching 2 feet possible across the Michigamme Highlands. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph through Monday afternoon then as high as 50 mph Monday night."
It's hard to believe, but the 2021-22 school years is wrapping up in just a few months. It's been a bit more of a "normal" school year than in the past few years, with many extra-curricular activities and other shades of pre-pandemic life returning.
If you're looking ahead to the next school year and what the best options are for public schools, the crew at Niche.com has released its tally of the best school districts in Michigan. The list is based on "rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education," according to Niche. "Ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, public school district ratings, and more."
As for more on their methodology, in addition, "Statistics obtained from the U.S. Department of Education represent the most recent data available, as self-reported by the school districts." The outlet also "collects data directly from schools via their Niche Partner Portal."
So, which school districts are on top? Read on for the full list of the top 50 best Michigan school districts, according to Niche. The top district is in the Detroit area, Northville, which scored an overall Niche score of an A+. If you dig a little deeper, it shows that most students from Northville are interested in attending Michigan State University, followed by the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. This is a great list, with many great districts. Both of my parents were public school educators, so it makes me proud to see all the quality public school options we have in the Great Lakes State.
