Michigan Weather Predicts Snowstorm, Frigid Temperatures
Say you want a Michigan white Christmas? Be careful what you wish for. The chances for a white Christmas in Michigan are getting higher and higher, but if we do get one, it might really hamper Christmas weekend travel.
While the beginning of this week will be quiet throughout much of Michigan, that is likely to change as we get closer to the festive holiday. That’s not great news for anything with travel plans.
Monday (Dec. 19) through Thursday afternoon (Dec. 22) look pretty tame across much of lower Michigan. Temperatures will be cold, with lows in the teens and highs in the 20s and 30s, but there isn’t much snow on the forecast. In fact, sunshine is in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday for much of lower Michigan. If anything, we’ll just get a light dusting of a “wintery mix” but nothing that sticks.
On late Thursday (Dec. 22) and Friday (Dec. 23), things get dicey. According to forecast projections at Weather.com, a significant winter storm will make its way across lower Michigan during the day Friday and keep going through Friday night before tapering off Saturday. Right now, the Weather.com projects are around 3-5 inches during the day on Friday, with an additional 1-3 inches Friday evening, for Detroit, Lansing and much of lower Michigan. However, it’s too early to know for sure, so this could go either way. That said, forecasts do say significant numbers are likely.
In addition to the snow, high winds are expected. That means we could get power outages going into the Christmas holiday. Temperatures will fall even more Christmas weekend, with subzero wind chill numbers expected. Is it spring yet? I’m ready for it already.
