Swifty Swindlers: Scams Targeting Taylor Swift Ticket Seekers

Taylor Swift will be the main attraction at Ford Field this weekend, offering both entertainment and the potential for scams. With ticket prices averaging $1,300 for her upcoming shows, more and more people are looking to snag them from third-party sellers. However, scammers are capitalizing on people’s desperation by using a slick social media trick to con unsuspecting fans. This elaborate scam is gaining traction, leaving several people out of a lot of money.

There’s a recent story from Fox, about a woman named Jayme Johnson who wanted to score some tickets for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour for her son. She told the news outlet that she tried getting them when they first went on sale but had no luck. Then, a buddy of hers mentioned a post on social media. Johnson checked out the woman’s Facebook page, and everything seemed legit. There was a post advertising Taylor Swift concert tickets for sale. Excited, she bought two tickets for $650.

Now, here’s where things went downhill. The seller asked Jayme to use cash transfer apps like Venmo or Zelle. She messaged the seller multiple times, eagerly asking about her purchase. But all she got were a bunch of lame excuses in return. Finally, Jayme decided to call it quits and asked for a refund. That’s when she realized she wasn’t getting any tickets or her hard-earned cash back.

A similar situation occurred in St. Clair Shores ahead of the big Taylor Swift show. Resulting in the woman taking a $300 loss after a Facebook scam.

Helpful tips to avoid Swift Swindlers.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) actually came through with some handy tips on how to steer clear of those sneaky Swifty Swindlers and avoid ticket scams.

Try to buy your tickets straight from the venue itself. If you’re looking at resale options, stick to well-known ticket sellers like StubHub. When you’re making that purchase, go for a safe payment method like a credit card that’s got your back with protection.

Another tip: know the refund policy before you seal the deal on those tickets.
