SAVONLINNA, FINLAND – MAY 25: Brewer Mika Kosonen samples a new batch of OTAN beer during brewing at the Olaf Brewing microbrewery on May 25, 2022 in Savonlinna, Finland. Olaf Brewing has launched OTAN beer to celebrate Finland’s bid to join the NATO military alliance. OTAN is the French acronym for NATO and also means “I get” in Finnish. CEO Petteri Vänttinen says demand for OTAN beer has been tremendous, with orders even coming in from the USA. If you like beer, there are apparently 24 cities in the United States you should go to ahead of the D, because Detroit's ranked the 25 best beer city in the United States.

Real Estate Witch complied the data, and mentioned that beer will become a trillion dollar industry by 2030. Craft beers are also booming right now, as the number of craft breweries has tripled over the past ten years.

The site ranked the United States' 50 biggest metro areas beer scene by the following weighted factors:

  • breweries per capita (4x weighted)
  • average price per beer (3x weighted)
  • affordability of domestic beer (3x weighted)
  • affordability of imported beer (3x weighted)
  • average Yelp rating of breweries (3x weighted)
  • average Yelp rating of bars (3x weighted)
  • bars per capita (2x weighted)
  • "beer passion score" on Google Trends (2x weighted)
    • this was the amount of Google searches for 17 beer related terms

Detroit ranked first when it came to the best beer prices in the country, with the average price in the D, being more than $1 below the average at $3.55. This is where Detroit ranked in each of the categories, with the national averages in parenthesis:

  • average beer price: $3.55 ($4.78)
  • breweries per capita: 0.49 (1.34)
  • bars per 100,000 residents: 9.1 (19.0)
  • % of annual income - domestic beers: 2.7% (3.4%)
  • % of annual income - imported beers: 3.8% (4.2%)
  • average brewery Yelp rating: 4.14 (4.24)
  • average bar Yelp rating: 4.02 (4,12)
  • Passion score: Google Trends: 66.8 (64.4)

This is how the eight factors they used to rank the best beer cities were weighted, where Detroit was ranked the 25th best beer city in America:

  • breweries per 100,000 people (17%)
  • average price of one beer (13%)
  • affordability of domestic beer (13%)
  • affordability of imported beer (13%)
  • average Yelp rating of breweries in the city (13%)
  • average Yelp rating of bars in the city (13%)
  • bars per 100,000 people (9%)

National Beer Lovers Day: The Best IPA’s in Michigan

I'll be honest. I'm not quite a beer person, but I do know that IPA's are considered a beer. This type of brew was started in the 1700's in India. It's really seen a resurgence with microbreweries.

I hear its a very popular type of brew according to my fiance. He says they are crisper than a regular beer. I will take his word for it as I see the buzz about these brews all of the time!

Today is the day to honor this loved creation with National Beer Lovers Day. So raise a glass with your friends & support your local craft breweries. Stacker has put out a list of the best rated IPAs from Michigan. I will highlight the top 5 here for you to check out! Cheers!
