This Michigan City Has The Seventh Worst Drivers In America
I’m sure if you ask people in any city, they’ll tell you that their city has the worst drivers in America, and Detroit ranked seventh of the worst drivers in America. A new survey done by Consumer Affairs, ranked the twenty American cities with the worst drivers. These are the top ten:
- Memphis, TN
- Baton Rouge, LA
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Macon, GA
- Saint Louis, MO
- Clevaland, OH
- Detroit, MI
In order to complete the study, Consumer Affairs use the most recent data reported from the, United States Department of Transportation in 2021. That included National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
Here are the four factors that were added together to give each city it’s “crash score:”
- Total number of car crashes per 100,000 people
- Number of fatal crashes due to bad driving per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities due to positive blood alcohol content per 100,000 people
- Number of fatalities due to speeding per 100,000
For the purpose of this study bad driving is described as the following factors:
- Aggressive driving
- Careless driving
- Driving the wrong way on a one-way traffic way
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Following improperly
- Improper or erratic lane changing
- Making an improper turn
- Operating the vehicle in an erratic, reckless or negligent manner
- Operator inexperience
- Passing where prohibited
This is how Detroit ranked in cities with the worst drivers in America compared to the city with the worst drivers in America.
The city with the worst drivers, Memphis scored like this:
- Bad driving per 100K (32.3)
- Total car crash fatalities per 100K (37.9)
- Fatalities due to positive BAC per 100K (8.8)
- Fatalities due to speeding per 100K (7.6)
- This lead to a total crash score of (86.6)
Detroit (7) scored like this:
- Bad driving per 100K (12.0)
- Total car crash fatalities per 100K (23.7)
- Fatalities due to positive BAC per 10K (3.6)
- Fatalities due to speeding per 100K (7.7)
- This lead to a total crash score of (47.1)
