MSU to Cancel Classes on Anniversary of Tragic Mass Shooting
Michigan State University (MSU) has announced that classes will be canceled on Feb. 13, 2024, following a tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of three students about half a year ago. The university decided to cancel classes on the anniversary of the incident as a gesture of remembrance and respect.
As part of the healing process and a step towards resuming normalcy, MSU’s interim president, Teresa Woodruff, unveiled plans to reopen Berkey Hall in the fall, where two students lost their lives in the shooting. The building will offer space for faculty, academic staff, graduate students, and support staff with existing offices. Woodruff emphasized that returning to Berkey Hall is optional for students and employees, and alternative options will be provided to those who prefer not to reenter the space.
MSU to cancel classes on Feb. 13
On this particular day, classes will be suspended, but the university will continue its operations. This is to provide support for students and the community. Normal class sessions will resume on February 14, but neither assignments nor exams will be expected on that date. Instead, assignments and exams may be rescheduled for February 15 and beyond, extending throughout the rest of the semester.
MSU is taking a thoughtful and inclusive approach to honoring the victims and supporting the community’s healing. Woodruff announced a remembrance event that will incorporate input and feedback from the Spartan community. A dedicated group within MSU’s Public Art on Campus Committee has been established. This is to ensure the process is inclusive and respectful of the collective grief experienced by the university.
“Spartans are defined by their commitment to support and look out for one another in service of the common good,” wrote Woodruff. “I am grateful to be part of such a special and caring community and, together, we will continue our journey toward an environment that is safe, welcoming and supportive for all.”
The mass shooting at MSU brought national attention to the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, it was the 67th mass shooting in the country in 2023.
