PHILADELPHIA, PA - OCTOBER 24: Visitors wait in line at "Terror Behind the Walls" haunted house on October 24, 2017 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The haunted house covers 11 acres of the Eastern State Penitentiary, which operated from 1829-1971 and imprisoned famous criminals like Al Capone. In its 27th year, the Halloween fixture hires nearly 300 seasonal actors and staff for 32 nights of tours, with ticket sales generating 50% of the U.S. National Historic Landmark's annual revenue. This past Friday was Friday the 13th and Halloween is right around the corner. Friday on the Morning BOUNCE we asked listeners to tell us about some haunted places in Michigan. We got your standard calls; Eloise Asylum, The Whitney and the roof of the Masonic Temple came up as expected. We then got a call from Gail Offen, the author of Michigan Haunts: Public Places, Eerie Spaces.
A couple of the examples that she gave were; a graveyard across the street from Eloise, where there are 7,000 graves just with numbers on them because people didn’t claim them. So, they only have numbers on which is kind of sad.
You can learn more about the Eloise Cemetery on their Official Website.
There’s a dive bar on Mount Elliot called the 2 Way Inn. The daughter of the original owner haunts the bathroom and keeps the door shut when you want to go in there, which is inconvenient, right? There’s a ghost named Al who, believe it or not, drowned in sewage. What a way to go. And he haunts that hotel.
The final place that she told us about was Fair Lane Manor, which she told us is; “kind of fun because there’s actually a haunted butler and chauffeur that apparently still work for Henry Ford there that people see when they tour the mansion.”
Finally, Shannon asked Gail what got her interested in writing this book and interested in learning about these places and this was her answer:
I just got interested, and I’m not a ghost hunter, I’m a historian, but it’s interesting there’s so many places in Detroit that have so many haunted legends. And along the way, people would tell me stories and I thought, well, it needs a book, but people need to visit these places because it’s interesting.
