Detroit Hair Salon Offers Free Cuts & Style For Homeless
A new hair salon just opened in Detroit that aims to give back to those in need. Exquisite Stylez & Braidz Beauty Salon, celebrated its grand opening this past weekend in Detroit. After renovating the building on W. 7 Mile over the past year, the salon held an event to showcase its new space to the community.
Exquisite Stylez & Braidz aims not only to serve the area with fresh hairdos, but also to give back through community service. One of its major initiatives is providing free haircuts and styling to people experiencing homelessness. Though the salon has done this before, the new location will allow them to offer these free services on a monthly basis.
As the salon’s Theresa Mitchell told Fox 2 Detroit, “Giving back is the most important part. You’re not successful if you don’t give back to somebody. You have to share your wealth and your knowledge.” In addition to the free haircuts, Exquisite Stylez & Braidz runs a nonprofit focused on mentoring and empowering youth through entrepreneurship and self-discovery. Black-Owned Celebrity Hair Care Lines You May Have Forgotten About
Black actresses are giving curly-haired consumers more options when it comes to hair care products. Celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Issa Rae, and Tia Mowry are taking the black hair care space by storm.
Most of these women saw that the hair industry needed a major change. Ross told Refinery29 in 2019 that she had to wake up three hours before her early morning call time to do her own hair. “I’ve worked on jobs where there was a lot of support, celebration, and understanding of my Blackness,” Ross told the news outlet. “But when it came to hair, I’ve been my own little lone ranger.”
Union had similar experiences during her career. She told Allure that she has been in a thousand different situations where the people who work in glam had no idea how to deal with textured hair. “The stylists on set had no idea how to do my hair from start to finish,” Union told Allure. “I became this weird guinea pig where they would try to make it work with whatever products they had.”
It’s refreshing to see celebrities transform the hair care aisle at stores with their brands. From hair oils to nourishing hair masks, there are now products with a focus on black hair care.
Here are Black-owned celebrity hair care lines you may have forgotten about.
