Detroit Lions Should Be Happy to Play the L.A. Rams – Here’s Why
If you’re like me, you’re a bit irked by the Detroit Lions playing the L.A. Rams in this weekend’s upcoming Wild Card game. I really wanted this to be Detroit’s moment. I didn’t want the Matthew Stafford narrative to overshadow what great things this Detroit team has accomplished. But, in the end, the Rams ended up the No. 6 seed. The Lions closed out the season the No. 3 seed. So, it’s Detroit vs. Los Angeles the Sunday (Jan. 14) at Ford Field. But, the Detroit Lions should be happy to play the L.A. Rams, and here’s why.
Jeff Risdon of the USA Today Lions Wire joined me on “The Squad with Anne Erickson” this week to talk all things NFL. Of course, at the top of our list of things to talk about is the upcoming Lions vs. Rams game. Both Risdon and I agree that it’s annoying to hear the national media talk about this game only in relation to Matthew Stafford being “back in Detroit.” But, Risdon made some excellent points about why the Lions should be happy with the matchup. He says that’s because it’s a game that this team is suited to win.
“I am happy in part because it means that it’s not the Packers, and there’s two reasons for that,” he said. “First of all, I think the Packers can go into Dallas and win, and that’s good for the Lions going forward. And the second thing is that the Rams, yeah, they have Matthew Stafford and Aaron Donald and Puka Nacua is a really good rookie. But, their overall team doesn’t match up all that well with the Lions. I think it was the best possible matchup for Detroit in terms of who they wanted to face, whether it was going to be Seattle or Green Bay. I thought the Lions got a really good draw there.”
He added, “There are a lot of things the Rams don’t do well, and what the Lions do well matches up pretty well against that.” Listen to the full episode below, where we also talk Super Bowl predictions, Matt Patricia and more. Hit me up on social media here.
