Detroit City Distillery’s Orange Cream Pączki Vodka: Learn How It’s Made
Detroit City Distillery’s Orange Cream Pączki Vodka was officially released last Friday just in time for Pączki Day on February 13th. The release is ahead of their Pączki Day Party on February 10, 2024.
What is a Pączki?
Pączki’s are Polish pastries, usually fruit or custard filled and topped with powdered sugar, glaze or icing. The origin was to use up all of the lard, sugar, butter and eggs before Lent. Which is how pączki’s originated.
What is Pączki Day?
Pączki Day is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is also the same day as Fat Tuesday. Hamtramck is one of the most densely populated Polish areas in the country, and that is why Pączki Day is so popular in Detroit.
How Orange Cream Pączki Vodka was created:
Six years ago Detroit City Distillery’s head distiller, Steve Orzechowski, had a crazy idea to throw Raspberry pączki’s into the still with Polish vodka. Which was how the original idea came to be.
The first year, they made 20 bottles for family, and six years later they’re producing 20,000 bottles for sale.
New Palace Bakery, makes the pączki’s, which are used to make the vodka recently started making an orange cream. Which is how the new flavor was introduced. Detroit City Distillery’s Orange Cream Pączki Vodka is available to be purchased for the first time this year and can be purchased here.
Detroit City Distillery’s Pączki Day Party is the Saturday before Pączki Day from 10 am – 10 pm. So people who can’t party on a Tuesday to attend. The event will be held at their tasting room, 2462 Riopelle St. in Detroit. They’ll have Faygo, Hamtramck bakeries and restaurants and a block long SHOT SKI at the event.
