Michigan is Breaking Heat Records
If it doesn’t feel like winter in Michigan, that’s because we’re breaking heat records this month. The first half of February, much of Michigan had super mild temperatures, which is not usual for this time of year. Not that I’m complaining. I love warm weather and detest cold and snow, so I’m loving this new environment.
According to the National Weather Service data base, the start of February 2024 has been the warmest and with the least amount of snow in the history of West Michigan. For about the first two weeks of February, temperatures were above average every single day. Aside from West Michigan, Lansing got up to a balmy 61 degrees on Feb. 8, according to Weather.com. That’s so wild. But, I’ll take it. Several days were also in the 50s in the first part of February, and 50-degree days are in the forecast again later this month.
As for snow, according to the National Weather Service data base, West Michigan, which is known for being snowy, has seen the least amount of days with snow since the 1982-1983 winter season. So, they’re not getting nearly the lake-effect snow that they usually do. It’s not just Michigan, either. Other in Iowa, they’re also seeing record temperatures, according to Weareiowa.com. Moreover, in Chicago, the Windy City has seen the warmest February open in 56 years, according to wgntv.com.
So, will this balmy weather last? According to Weather.com, the rest of February should bring normal-to-above-normal temperatures to Michigan. The rest of the month is on target to have highs in the 30s and 40s, which is pretty normal. If those temperature linger more in the 40s, then that will mean more above-normal temperature days, though. I could get used to this. Thankfully, the first day of spring is coming up pretty soon, on March 19. So, the temps should really heat up after that. Before then, I’m all for more of Michigan breaking heat records.
