Keep Growing Detroit is on a Mission for a Food Sovereign City
Hey, it’s Shannon Renee with the Morning Bounce and that’s me in the pic above! I am on a mission this year to encourage people to learn how to just grow one thing. My husband and I grew a vegetable garden last year ourselves. I cannot express how much joy it brought me and I want others to experience that as well. There’s nothing like going out there every day and being surprised about what the garden offers. Also, it is a fact that times are changing and I don’t want people to get left behind when it comes to what is essential in life, food. So, it’s my mission to help people become a little more self-sufficient when it comes to the fresh foods that they consume.
So, I am so grateful that I found the nonprofit organization Keep Growing Detroit located right here in the city. They are an awesome organization whose mission is “to promote a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables consumed by Detroiters are grown by residents within the city’s limits.” Not only do they have their Garden resource program, but they have a bunch of other programs like beekeeping for you to learn as well.
Keep Growing Detroit Garden Tour
I had the opportunity to tour their 1.5 acre garden in the heart of Eastern Market. Now, the tour happened in March before things got growing, but it will look much different in just a short period of time as the season rolls along.! Be sure to check back on the progress of the farm!
