Netflix Drops Trailer For Pop-Tart Origin Movie Set In Battle Creek
Netflix released a trailer for a new comedy that tells the story of the origin of the Pop-Tart. It’s set in 1963 Battle Creek. As a Michigander, this is pretty awesome. I went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where Kellogg’s was founded. So, it’s almost like a close-to-home moment for me with a movie being filmed about a place I spent a few years roaming and hearing about “Cereal City.”
About “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story”
The comedy is set in 1963 Battle Creek and centers around the cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post in their race to invent the first shelf-stable pastry. Obviously, it’s not a spoiler at this point, but Kellogg’s won the race.
After watching the trailer, you’ll see that it features Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, and more. It’s worth mentioning that the movie is a comedy and is loosely based on a true story.
Seinfeld, who also directs the film, told Netflix that “this really did happen in Battle Creek, Michigan, where Kellogg’s and Post were located, and they did compete to come up with this product. But the rest of it is complete lunacy.”
According to Netflix, Seinfeld has been thinking about the Pop-Tart for a long time. As far back as a Late Show appearance in 2010, the comedian and actor has been stewing on the rectangular Kellogg’s snack. In 2018, At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop Tart movie.

Interestingly, the steaming service noted that Seinfeld’s favorite Pop-Tart flavor is brown sugar. To be clear, he likes it “toasted.” He said, “I do not like Pop-Tarts untoasted.” He added, “The flavors come together in the toaster. There’s something sad about a cold Pop-Tart. It’s soulless. It’s devoid of emotion. Incomplete.”
More About Kellogg’s and Post
Fox 17 in Grand Rapids reported that Bill Post, a Grand Rapids man is responsible for one of Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts. In 2022, Bill Post started working at the Keebler Co. Bakery on 28th St. when he was 16. About 20 years later, he was approached by Kellogg’s employees hoping to get some help on their next greatest idea, a toaster pastry.
Many years ago, people were able to visit Kellogg’s factory in Battle Creek. According to the New York Times, in April 1986, the company stopped public tours. People were no longer allowed to watch a machine press the cornflakes. The company said it had no choice. Spies from rival manufacturers were sneaking in with the tourists,
Kellogg announced it would be splitting into two companies, the cereal giant completed its separation into Kellanova and WK Kellogg Co. in 2023. The separation distributed all shares of WK Kellogg Co. to holders of Kellanova while Kellanova shareholders received one share of WK Kellogg’s common stock for every four shares of Kellanova common stock, according to WWMT.
