Will the Detroit Lions Become the Next ‘NFL Dynasty?’
There are a handful of teams that are simply an NFL Dynasty. Teams such as the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys have won the most Super Bowls over the years. But, times are changing. There’s a new wave of teams that are getting lots of attention and winning games. So, which team will become the next NFL dynasty?
Are the Detroit Lions on Target to Be the Next ‘NFL Dynasty’
BleacherReport.com has a new feature out taking a crack at which teams could be among the next NFL Dynasty teams. Let’s get No. 1 out of the way. I’m actually shocked. First of all, this team is already a dynasty of sorts. To me, an article such as this should picked teams that haven’t had consistent success over the years as being teams that could become the next dynasty. But, writer and NFL expert Kristopher Knox puts the San Francisco 49ers as the team with the next chance of being the next dynasty. Hey, I’m an NFL expert, too, and have my own NFL podcast. But, even if I don’t agree with his No. 1 pick, I have to say that I agree with most of the other choices. So, he has the 49ers as No. 1, but does admit that, “The 49ers are potentially closer to the end of their window than any other team on this list,” because they’re likely to be $23.4 million over the cap in the next offseason and have an aging roster. But, he puts them at the top of the tally because they were already one win away from a Super Bowl, and he thinks that could happen again soon. He also has a lot of faith in young quarterback Brock Purdy to help the franchise for the next decade.
No. 2 on the tally is a team I would have chosen, too: the Detroit Lions. Obviously, I’m here in Detroit, and they’re my team. But, even aside from my love for the team, I think they’re on target to be the next NFL dynasty. In the article, Knox gives head coach Dan Campbell props for really changing the team’s culture since he took over in 2021. He notes that “On paper, the Lions have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, and they locked up key players like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell this offseason.” He adds, and this is important, that Detroit has managed all of this without impacting cap flexibility. He also notes that the Lions have a good mix of young and veteran talent. Finally, because of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott being a free agent in 2025 and Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford getting past his mid-30s, “the Lions are better poised than either of those teams to be the NFC’s next dynasty,” he adds. I love it. Looking further down on the tally, the Houston Texans are No. 3 and the Philadelphia Eagles are No. 4. Finally, and this one pains me, but the Green Bay Packers are No. 5.
