Michigan Central Station near Corktown downtown was finally reopened after lying dormant for 26 years. As we know, back in 2018 the Ford family announced that they were going to restore Michigan Central. Detroit native, Big Sean performed  when the announcement was made and was back for the grand opening.

We all know about the star-studded, “Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central,” concert that was held to celebrate the re-opening of the venue. The concert, was produced by Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg had an all star lineup. That lineup featured:

  • Diana Ross
  • Eminem
  • Big Sean
  • Fantasia
  • Common
  • Slum Village
  • The White Stripes
  • Jelly Roll
  • Melissa Etheridge
  • Detroit Symphony Orchestra

That show is now officially available to be streamed on Peacock, and the day after the show Michigan Central Station was officially opened for tours. Shannon Renee and myself were able to go there last Tuesday and check the space out.

As someone who didn’t know the history of Michigan Central, I loved that they were able to tell the story of where the venue was and where it is now. There were many spaces where they had an old picture what that exact location looked like before the renovations and how they look now. Those pictures really show you how much work was put into this space.

While touring, Shannon brought up how surprised she was that they were able to find so many left over items, given that the space had so many things taken from it during the 26 years that it was unoccupied.

Some of the really cool things they found and had on display were; the lost and found book, an adding machine, railroad ticket stubs and a message in a bottle. Through their restoration process they were able to analyze part of the note, which was really cool. Tours are now available and opened to the public, if you have family members who have any history with the venue, I’m sure this would be super cool for them. You can book a tour on Michigan Central’s official website.

What Makes Mexican Food Authentic

My husband is Mexican. I asked him what makes Mexican food authentic to him. He said, "To me, authentic Mexican food has minimal ingredients with maximum flavor. So many spices are used to elevate otherwise bland ingredients into something amazing. The refried beans aren't just pinto beans. And the rice isn't just yellow rice. The spices that are added to it give it an authentic flavor. For me, authentic Mexican food represents lots of spices & has a colorful presentation. It's also about the use of traditional kitchen tools. My Mom spent hours making food from scratch with a molcajete (mortar and pestle), tortilla press, and a comal."

History of Mexicantown Detroit

Mexicantown is such a unique and vibrant area in Detroit. The area itself is considered to be within Southwest Detroit. While it was named "Mexicantown" in the late 80's, the Mexican population in Detroit started setting in the area in the 1920s due to increased industrial labor jobs.  Further surges of immigration decades later increased the population in the area. Not only are there authentic Mexican restaurants in the area, but brightly colored buildings are painted with amazing murals. The area is just so rich in culture.  If you'd like to learn more about its history, check out the book "Detroit's Mexicantown" By Maria Elena Rodriguez.
