Previous Conviction for R. Kelly
R. Kelly, who was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for child pornography charges and sexually abusing four girls (three of whom were minors), is now petitioning the Supreme Court. He's hoping to overturn his convictions on the grounds that the alleged crimes occurred decades ago and fall outside the statute of limitations.
Kelly's legal team argues that the PROTECT Act, under which he was convicted, became law in 2003 and does not apply to crimes committed in the 1990s only to crimes committed after the passing of the law. The Supreme Court is expected to decide in the coming months whether to hear his appeal. This situation is controversial, as it hinges on legal technicalities rather than the nature of the crimes themselves. Many people have strong opinions about this case, and it's a topic that continues to stoke intense public debate.
