Detroit People Mover Closure for Track Improvements
As mentioned in today’s Shannon’s Scoop, the Detroit People Mover is closing for repairs.
A couple of months ago, we gave you a heads-up that this was coming, and now it’s official: the Detroit People Mover has closed for an estimated 11 weeks. This closure is part of an important effort to improve the track infrastructure.
About 7,000 feet of track across nine curves will be replaced. This accounts for roughly 20% of the entire three-mile loop. The primary goal of this project is to extend the life of the track infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience by providing a smoother and quieter ride.
The good news is that the People Mover is expected to reopen before Thanksgiving, and even better—Detroit’s zero-fare program will continue throughout next year. This program was initially intended for this year only, but thanks to the closure, it’s been extended. So, despite the temporary inconvenience, there’s something positive to look forward to when the service resumes.
