Since 2009, music superstar Elton John has helped rapper Eminem stay clean by sponsoring his AA and being his trusted friend.

"When I first wanted to get sober, I called him and spoke to him about it," said Eminem to Radar Online.

The Detroit rapper nearly died from a methadone overdose in 2007. His struggle included serious addictions to Valium, Vicodin, and Ambien.

A source close to the situation stated, "Eminem has been tempted so many times to slide back into his destructive addictions when pressures have mounted in his life, but one call to Elton and he talks him off the ledge."

John's support comes from his own recovery journey. In 1990, the "Rocket Man" singer checked into a Chicago rehab center to beat his cocaine and alcohol addiction.

Their friendship works because they understand each other. Both dealt with substance abuse while living in the public eye.

Now sober for thirty years, John rebuilt his life without drugs. His recovery inspires him to help others who are struggling.

They still keep in touch through good times and bad. Their friendship shows how important support is in overcoming addiction.

But after realizing he didn’t quite have the voice for radio, he made the jump to TV—spending 23 years working for CBS, FOX, and NEWSnet. Now, he’s come full circle, back in radio as Detroit’s Digital Program Director, making noise behind the scenes and keeping things running strong online.
