Baltimore Lions Club Holds Annual Winter Gear Giveaway, Looking To Help 100 Residents

The New Baltimore Lions Club will soon give out winter items to locals who need them. The event takes place October 18 at the Lempke-Blackwell VFW Post 7573.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., people can pick up winter coats, warm accessories, jeans, and boots at no cost. "We chose to do this event to give back to the community we serve," said Club member Pam DeClaire, according to The Voice.

Last year's drive helped 70 people stay warm through winter. This time, organizers Judy Gable and Pam DeClaire aim higher. "We are hoping to beat last year, possibly 100," DeClaire said.

Donations piled up steadily through the year, with a big push in September. Local shops stepped up too, adding new items to the mix. "The kids try on things, the kids are excited. And a lot of it is brand new," Gable said.

Before opening day, volunteers will sort items by size. Hot dogs will welcome everyone who stops by. After the event ends, any remaining items will go to veterans and groups that support people without homes.

Since 1978, this Lions Club branch has worked to make life better in New Baltimore. They provide vision checks, give hearing aid support, stock food banks, back youth activities, fund student scholarships, and support veterans.

Members meet once a month at the VFW Post. In 2016, they installed a 160-foot flagpole at Walter and Mary Burke Park. They spend $10,000 yearly to keep it in good shape.
