ChargePoint has opened its first fast-charging site in Canton, Michigan. The company plans to add more than 40 ports across metro Detroit. This happens through a partnership with Dabaja Brothers Development Group. The first location went online in late November. Additional sites are planned for Dearborn and Livonia.

"We started this project because we saw a gap in our community—there was almost nowhere to charge an EV in Canton, and a similar lack of charging across metro Detroit," said Yousef Dabaja, owner/operator at Dabaja Brothers Development Group, as per Clean Technica.

The installations aim to fix charging deserts in the Detroit area, where Canton, Livonia, and Dearborn have had limited access to EV charging infrastructure for years. According to PlugShare, the Detroit, Warren, Dearborn area has around 350 fast chargers right now.

Each site will feature ChargePoint Express Plus fast-charging stations—equipment that can deliver up to 500 kW to a single port and can fast-charge two vehicles at the same time. All stations work with every EV model on the market today.

The stations operate on the new ChargePoint Platform. This lets operators monitor performance and adjust pricing. They can troubleshoot issues and gain real-time insights into how each station performs. A proprietary cooling system delivers peak charging speeds for extended periods, which keeps charging speed consistent throughout the session.

"This initiative will rapidly infill the 'fast charging deserts' across the Detroit area, allowing drivers to quickly recharge their vehicles when and where they need to," said Rick Wilmer, CEO at ChargePoint, as reported by Electrek.

EV drivers will be able to charge while they shop, dine, or visit local attractions at the various locations. The project follows another recent announcement of 201 new EV chargers set for installation at Michigan apartment complexes earlier in November.

The expansion represents more than a 10 percent increase in fast-charging availability for the metro area, cutting down the distance EV drivers must travel to find a charge and reducing range concerns for local residents and travelers passing through the region.
