Macomb County Animal Control will host an adoption event Jan. 24 with indoor activities for dogs during winter, as per the Macomb Daily. The event starts at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 2 p.m. at 21417 Dunham Road in Clinton Township.

Dogs adopted that day leave with a bag full of toys. Attendees can meet pets searching for homes, grab activity ideas to take home, and sip hot cocoa.

Lori Hampton works as the operations assistant with the organization. She said the event helps people keep their pets busy when outdoor time becomes tough, as shared by the Macomb Daily. Staff will share tips through handouts and demonstrations for different ways owners can set up activities at home.

"Obviously we can't take walks or do things like that, we are going to just kind of be providing tips," Hampton told Macomb Daily. "We have handouts or different, you know, ways that we can demonstrate things or different ways that people can provide in-home enrichment when they're not able to get out."

One example? Sniffing activities. Hampton pointed out that 20 minutes of a dog sniffing around equals a one-mile walk.

"We're just trying to give them some alternatives so that their dogs are, you know, happy and not chewing up their couches and everything else in the middle of winter," she said, according to the Macomb Daily.

Hampton explained that dogs need activities to stay mentally happy and healthy when winter hits. Cold weather makes outdoor time hard. This program gives pet owners solutions when they can't get outside much.
