Purposeful Youth Detroit is an innovative mentoring, tutoring and service learning organization for girls ages 6-18. They initiate many service learning projects throughout the year to help the girls learn to be a part of the solution in their community.
For the 5th year, they are kicking off a HUGE charity initiative to meet the need of the thousands of Michiganders who struggle to provide shoes for themselves and their families. This heartfelt event is entitled, the ‘Million Shoe March: Shoes for Soles in Need’ and will be held on September 28, 2019 at the Milliken State Park and Harbor in downtown Detroit from 12-5pm. 1900 Atwater, near The Aretha.
They will be providing FREE shoes, socks, winter wear and hygiene items to the community.
Shoes and warm socks are essential staples for daily living in Michigan. With it’s extreme seasons, shoes and socks are critical to health and safety in travel, work and play. Some people have a closet full of shoes to choose from to fit the occasion; while a vast majority of people from underserved populations just long for one good sturdy pair – free from holes, tears and worn soles.
Imagine: One square mile of over 500,000 pair of new and gently used shoes; lined up, side by side, along a beautiful riverfront park and available for the community to freely select as many pair as they need. Along the “road of shoes”, they hope that our visitors will find essentials, such as: booties for their babies, boots to prepare for the cold, bitter winter to come, a pair of pumps for a young lady’s upcoming interview or work boots for the man who just landed a new job, school shoes for children who just began a new journey in school or perhaps just a comfortable pair of shoes to help a homeless woman walk her many miles each day. Everyone needs them, but not everyone has access to them.
You can help by donating too at the locations below until September 23rd.
