Rolling Stone has just released a new list of five hot Michigan rap acts that fans need to know. What I love about this article is that Rolling Stone says Michigan is a hotbed for new hip-hop talent. It’s about time we get some national recognition. I mean, we’re the birthplace of Eminem and Big Sean, two of the most popular rappers of all time, and a slew of other big hip-hop names.
“The rap coming out of the Mitten State is among the most vital in the country,” Rolling Stone states in the article. I agree with this sentiment.
In addition to Eminem to Big Sean, more famous rappers out of Michigan, mainly Detroit, are Tee Grizzley, Xzibit and D12. Outside of hip-hop, the Motor City has also birthed artists such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Darin and The Commodores.
I’m personally a big Eminem fan. When I got my start in rock radio, the station I was at even played Eminem, since he was so big in Michigan and crossed genres. “Lose Yourself” was one of the most requested songs on the radio station where I worked- even though it was a rock station. Then, years later, I saw “8 Mile,” which was such a great film. I think Eminem continues to make great music today. He has stayed relevant, which is difficult to do for 20-plus years in the music industry, especially in a genre as dynamic as hip-hop. He remains true to his original character but isn’t afraid to try new things, to boot, which always makes his projects interesting. Okay, enough about my love for all things Eminem.
