Cinco de Mayo is almost here! The Fifth of May holiday recognizes Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Contrary to popular belief, the day doesn’t commemorate Mexican independence. Mexico declared its independence more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.

You can join in on the festivities and celebrate with family and friends. Across Detroit, there will be lucha libres, live performances, food festivals, karaoke and more.

This year, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday. So, what better way to kick off your weekend than celebrating with great food, wonderful drinks, fabulous music, and great vibes? In addition to celebrating at local restaurants and businesses in Mexicantown, Southwest Detroit, you can also enjoy events happening throughout the city.

The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta returns this year. Taking place at 21st and Bagley, it’s presented by the Mexican Patriotic Committee. Alma Cruz, the president of the committee, told El Central Hispanic News that the event is going to be a three-day celebration. It will be open every day that weekend until 8 p.m., except on Sunday when it closes at 7 p.m. “The Parade will be part of the finale down the W. Vernor Hwy. corridor on Sunday, May 7th starting at 12noon.” Cruz said. “Streets leading to W. Vernor will start closing at 11:30am. and open back up around 2:30 p.m.”
