Prince’s Biggest Fan Was a 93-year-old Woman
When Mary Boyer turned 60-years-old, she saw Purple Rain for the first time. On July 1984, her friend invited her to a screening of the film. Mary told Thrillist that “As soon as [Prince] came on [the screen], my heart just went [makes whooshing noise], and I said, ‘I know this guy. I just know him. By the end of the film, that was my guy.”

Ever since the movie opened up with Prince singing “Let’s Go Crazy”, she knew that she was going to become one of his biggest fans. Mary went on to see Purple Rain 25 times in theaters and even traveled to see the movie in different locations. As Thrillist reports, she visited “New York Detroit, Chicago, Canada, and his home base Minneapolis.” In her home, she even had a special room dedicated to the musician!
The walls of her special Prince room were painted purple and was filled with every article of memorabilia from the musicians’ career. She told Thrillist that, at one time, “she had 300 posters, 100 different T-shirts, and more than 1,200 unique albums in every format.”
Mary never intended on being a collector of everything Prince. However, she found herself purchasing more and more items that were Prince related. Once her children moved out of her house, she placed all of her found items into their room. Then, the real transformation began! She painted the walls purple in order to top off the entire room.

Throughout the many concerts she attended, Mary never actually met the superstar face-to-face. However, at one show in April 1993 at the Chicago’s Metro, he pointed to her and stated “Whose grandma is that down there? We gotta get her up here and have her shake her doodle!” She was then invited up on stage to dance to ‘Johnny’.
Sadly, Mary passed away on April 28, 2016. We can only hope that the two are rocking up in heaven.
