Uncle Luke To Bring FreakNik Back To Atlanta
Uncle Luke is bringing FreakNik back to Atlanta.
“What’s the deal baby? Atlanta, Georgia! Aye! This is a very important message that you need to understand. And you need to listen. Listen real clearly,” Luke said in a promotional video.
“I am bringing FreakNik back to Atlanta,” he shares before the clip switches to Da Brat.
“Wooo hooo hooo hooo! I know you just went crazy! It’s finna be crazy off in that thang!,” Da Brat said in the promo video.
Atlanta producer Jazzy Pha is hosting the event while Adina Howard, Bun B, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, Lil Scrappy, Pastor Troy, Twista, and Uncle Luke will be performing, among others.
The 2019 FreakNik takes place on Jun. 22 at Lakewood Amphitheatre, and over 18,000 people are expected to attend the nostalgic event.
What started out as Friknik in the ’80s, an annual spring break meet up in Atlanta by students of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) swiftly turned into FreakNik once the word spread like a wildfire across the nation. It continued throughout the ’90s until many Atlanta residents and business owners began to file complaints and law suits. By 1999 the festival’s attendance decreased due to heavy policing.
Lil Kim referenced the popular event on her 1996 single “Crush On You.”
“Want a cheap trick/You better go down to FreakNik/You got to hit me off/Buy this girl gifts of course/So I look sick in my six with my Christian Lacroix,” Kim rapped.
