Antonio “El Diablo” Riano has been wanted since a fatal shooting outside of an Ohio bar since 2004. Now, 20 years later he’s finally been captured. It turns out, he wasn’t exactly running from the law as he had been working as a Police Officer in Mexico City! However, now, he’ll be on the other side of the justice system.
According to FOX 19, the Mexico-native is accused of killing 25-year-old Benjamin Becarra with a gunshot to the head at Round House Bar in Hamilton, Ohio. The Post reports that Becarra was involved in a brawl at the bar a few weeks prior and was asked to leave. However, he returned on December 19th, 2004 and was shot and killed after getting into an argument with Riano, per FOX 19. That’s when Riano fled the bar in his van and took off. However, surveillance video showed Riano purchasing ammo at a local Walmart just before the shooting occurred, per FOX 19.
According to FOX 19, the murder weapon was discovered 10 days after he fled. Essentially, law enforcement had everything they needed to arrest him–but he was nowhere to be found. The case picked up steam earlier this year when investigators were able to find Riano using the internet. It took some outstanding teamwork to bring him in with local, federal, and Mexican authorities helping during the case.
Following the incident, Riano was placed on Butler County Sheriff’s Office’s “Most Wanted” list and was then featured in a 2005 episode of “America’s Most Wanted.” It sounds like they never really gave up on finding them and now all of their efforts have paid off! Crazy that when he was located he was working as a police officer. He must have picked up some tips along the way and learned some things while running from the police. That’s a job you’d never expect him to be working! You can see his mugshot provided by the Butler County Sheriff below.
