Sexyy Red Gets Spooked In New ‘Punk’d’ Reboot Prank
Sexyy Red experienced the scare of a lifetime from a “demonic ghost” during a prank by one of the creators of Punk’d. In an episode of the recently rebranded show, now called Punk You, the St. Louis rapper encounters a fake poltergeist in what becomes a terrifying ordeal.
The eight-minute video on the Punk You YouTube channel captures the rapper and a group of her family and friends preparing to stay at a secluded Texas mansion for a couple of days. They already feel uneasy, with one of Sexyy’s friends suggesting they hit a strip club instead of staying in.
“I’m stressed out tonight,” she says. “I need to go out. See some big booty freaks.” As they realize the mansion is surrounded by woods, Sexyy expresses her discomfort. “I’m getting weird feelings and stuff,” she says, curled up on the couch. “I’m getting chills, nah, this is weird.”
Her unease is validated when the lights start flickering, and she gets goosebumps. The TV glitches, showing the image of a little girl through static, and panic sets in. Sexyy tries to leave, but her head of security (who’s in on the prank) tells her he just went to the store to grab some Backwoods. She then FaceTimes a friend to explain what’s happening, but they deny noticing anything. That’s when chaos breaks loose.
Eventually, Sexyy’s crew reveals the prank, leaving her relieved but still shaken. She jokes, “I’m still leaving!”
On X (formerly Twitter), she added, “I got punkd yal! [three crying emojis]” along with a clip from the episode.
Other rappers to be featured in the first season of Punk You include NLE Choppa and DDG.
According to Billboard, this version of Punk’d is tailored for the digital age. “This is a format that we’ve specifically designed for social media,” said producer Sophie Watts during Adweek’s Brandweek. Sophie Watts and entrepreneur Joe White have brought back the legendary prank show with the help of Punk’d co-creator Jason Goldberg.
In 2020, another iteration of the show, hosted by Chance the Rapper, launched. The show teased a clip of Megan Thee Stallion screaming, “Is that a real Gorilla?!” as she spots a large furry creature escaping from a cage in a parking lot. The show aired on the short-form mobile streaming platform Quibi, which shut down less than a year later.
Originally hosted by Ashton Kutcher, Punk’d premiered on MTV in 2003. In 2022, Kutcher said he would not revisit his iconic prank show for a simple, wholesome reason. “I have friends again,” Kutcher said with a smile in an interview with Extra during the red carpet event for his film Vengeance.
