Are You A Lawnmower Parent ?!
A recent study found that parents these days are killing their kids’ life skills …
Thankfully my parents aren’t apart of those who apply to this study. However today USA Today announced the findings in a recent survey that they conducted.
According to the findings “By the time kids are old enough for college and way beyond the point they should have graduated, parents — whether wealthy or not — are still doing things children can do for themselves.”
These parents are doing things like …
- Reminding their adult children of deadlines they need to meet, including for schoolwork
- 74% of parents admitted to making appointments for them … Such as Dr. & Dental appointments
- 15 percent of parents with children in college admitted to texting or calling their child to wake them up so they didn’t sleep through a class or test.
- 11% ADMITTED TO CALLING THIER CHILDS EMPLOYER BECAUSE OF AN ISSUE HE OR SHE HAD AT WORK!!!!
I’m very fortunate to come from a loving family that supports me and what I chose to do with my life. But I’ll BE DAMNED if my parents call my boss because I had a rough day at work. That is just so over the top to me & not only that but how would that look to my employer if my mommy called the station because Anthony had a rough day?!
So here’s my opinion, and advice to parents who are considered “lawnmower parents” … Stop … Kids and young adults are supposed to make mistakes. No one is perfect, and I’m not claiming to be either. However it is through are mistakes that we grown in life. Without growth … We’re no better than the apes.
