Janet Mock Inks Historic Netflix Deal
Pose director, writer, and producer, Janet Mock recently signed a landmark deal with the streaming behemoth Netflix.
On Wednesday, Mock made the announcement via a video revealing that she has become the first transgender woman to garner such a partnership with a major media company.
The multi-year, multi-million dollar deal will see Mock provide the streaming platform with exclusive first-look rights to her television and film projects, according to Variety.
Mock will serve as an executive producer and director on Ryan Murphy’s new upcoming Netflix series, Hollywood, which would be the first fruit of the partnership between Mock and Netflix.
Mock’s new deal won’t stop her from continuing as a writer and episode-director for Murphy’s hit show on FX, Pose, which just got renewed for a third season.
As a part of the deal, Mock is currently developing a college drama that chronicles a young trans woman, a series about New Orleans after slavery was abolished, and a reboot of a classic sitcom.
“As a best-selling author, producer and director, Janet Mock has demonstrated she knows how to bring her vision to thrilling, vivid life,” Cindy Holland, Netflix VP of original content said. “She’s a groundbreaker and creative force who we think will fit right in here at Netflix.”
“There was a major shift after I directed, from the network and the powers that be, who saw me as an artistic voice,” Mock said. “I never saw myself as an artist, and when I was given the power to direct, I showed myself what I could do. That’s when everything changed.”
