What Did Flo Rida Mean By “Boots With The Fur?”
Flo Rida had one of the biggest songs of his generation with “Low” but one line has people everywhere divided.
The line is only four words but has sparked a great debate. When Flo Rida said, “Boots with the fur” it was widely accepted that he was talking about boots with fur trim. Now there is a growing movement arguing that Flo Rida actually meant that the woman was wearing boots with a fur coat. I’ll give you a minute to recover from this shocking news. I mean, it’s not every day that history is rewritten.
Boots With The Fur or Boots With A Fur?
How do normal people like us begin to get into the mind of musical genius? Let’s start by breaking down the lines around to see if we can find any contextual clues.
“Apple Bottom Jeans” is a clear reference to one of the most popular clothing brands of the time. The Apple Bottom brand also just announced that they are bringing back the iconic demin line for a limited time.
“Boots with the fur” is the vague line that has led us down this path.
“The whole club is lookin’ at her” suggests that if we could track down anyone in attendance that night, we could get a definitive answer here.
The point that has come up concerning the jeans is that if she were wearing a fur coat, nobody would be able to tell what kind of jeans she was wearing. I dispute this point by noting that if she is wearing a fur coat in the club, it is most likely a crop or fur shawl. This would end before the waistline and would not interfere with any view of her jeans. You can see what I’m talking about in the picture below.
Normally the first place I would look for answers to this type of question is Reddit, but even the Reddit users are unsure. Most of the Reddit community gets sidetracked trying to figure out if one or two girls are being described in the song. Obviously, there are two because Flo Rida describes two different outfits that the girls are wearing. One is representing the bougie look of Applebottom Jeans and a fur (see what I did there?) The other describes the laid-back, sexy casual look of baggy sweats and Reebok’s with a strap.
So where do we go from here? There is one line hidden in the lyrical masterpiece that may be hiding the answer. About two minutes into the song Flo Rida drops this hidden clue.
“I was just like a clover, Shawty was hot like a toaster”
Why was shawty so hot? Could it have anything to do with her fur coat? I think so. I know that fur boots would also make shawty hot, but she clearly was not wearing fur boots, but boots that fur on them (if you subscribe to the original theory). This is the tipping point evidence as far as I am concerned. The musical history books will undoubtedly be rewritten to show that shawty was in fact wearing a fur coat or shawl.
I’m sure there are those who will disagree, and the only way we will ever all know 100% is if Flo Rida himself clarifies. Until then we will just have to keep digging for hidden clues inside the lyrical depths of “Low”.
This is my Roman Empire.
