Wayne County Road Upgrades Begin with $21.5M Livonia Bridge Rebuild
A bridge closure in Wayne County on Monday, Jan. 6, begins a nearly year-long $21.5 million bridge investment project expected to impact traffic in Livonia.
The first phase of closures targets Old M-14, Ann Arbor Road, between Newburg Road and Market Street, which will be inaccessible through November 2025. The bridge’s closure along this stretch of Ann Arbor Road is the first phase of a larger project to improve this stretch of roadway.
In addition to reconstructing the Middle Rouge River, another bridge on Edward Hines Drive going over Ann Arbor Road will be replaced. Stretches of the road between the two bridges will also receive a much-needed facelift.
The Michigan Department of Transportation explained to WXYZ-TV that the $21.5 million will address road repaving, intersection rebuilding, and drainage improvements along the roadway. Rebuilding the century-old bridge, however, is the most significant expense of the project’s budget.
Work on rebuilding the second bridge, constructed before 1950 on Edward Hines Drive, will begin in the spring.
